The schedule is being finalized for the fourth annual FPEA Day at the Capitol
in Tallahassee on Friday, March 26. Let’s show our governmental representatives
that Florida homeschoolers speak with a united voice.
If you’re planning to attend, e-mail the FPEA office at office@fpea.com
by March 15 so we can plan accordingly. Box lunches will be available for
the lunch program for $3 each — when contacting the office, please specify
how many lunches you’d like to order. Please remember to email the office
with the field trips your family will be attending and the number of people
in your party.

TOUR DESCRIPTIONS
John G. Riley Center of African-American History and Culture (419
E. Jefferson St.)
Built in 1890, the Riley House is the only home in Florida once owned
by a freed slave that still stands at its original location. A National
Register of Historic Places property, it has been restored, is being preserved
and interpreted, and is the last visible evidence of a thriving African-American
community that once existed in downtown Tallahassee. Exhibits feature historical
artwork and photographs depicting life in Tallahassee and Florida from
1865 to 1968. Historical publications and Riley souvenirs are available
onsite in the gift shop. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children.

Governor's Mansion (700 N. Adams St.)
This Georgian-style Southern mansion patterned after The Hermitage
(Andrew Jackson's home) features antique furnishings and gifts from foreign
dignitaries. Tours are only given during the annual Legislative Session.

Museum of Florida History (500 S. Bronough St.)
Tracing Florida’s history throughout the centuries, permanent exhibits
include a mastodon skeleton, a diorama depicting life along the St. John’s
River before European contact, a tin-can camper that brought early tourists
to Florida, a recreated Florida steamboat, and a World War II exhibit.

FSU Museum of Fine Arts (25 Fine Arts Building)
This museum promotes appreciation of the arts as a source for ideas,
interaction and influence within society and culture. Offerings include
tours, outreach, exhibition packets for teachers (in hard copies or downloadable
form), a yearly student display, a yearly parent/student/teacher night,
a family Sunday afternoon each semester, teacher workshops, school partnerships,
university interdepartmental projects, and a university student volunteer

New Capitol Building (S. Duval St.)
One of four tower capitols in the U.S., the building features a panoramic
view from the 22nd-floor observatory/art gallery, and House and Senate
viewing galleries. View the recently installed soaring crescent of dolphins
by sculpture artist Hugh Bradford Nicholson. Admission is free (limit of

Historic Capitol of Florida (S. Monroe St.)
Restored to its 1902 appearance with a stained-glass dome and red-and-white
candy-striped awnings, the building houses the Florida Legislative Research
Center & Museum, restored House and Senate chambers, and the restored
Supreme Court and Governor's suite. Admission is free. For more information,

Mary Brogan Museum of Art & Science (Kleman Plaza, 350 S. Duval
St.)
Three floors of museum excitement. The first floor features interactive,
spectacular traveling science exhibits. The second floor offers the opportunity
to interact with the museum’s permanent collection. The Eco-Lab with living
sea specimens, Early Childhood space, the WCTV weather station and the
new Close Up Laboratory will delight visitors for hours. On the third floor,
visitors will delight in traveling world-class art exhibitions that range
from the works of the most famous of artistic masters to the spectacular
new styles of contemporary excitement. Admission is $6 for adults, $3.50
for children/students/seniors, and free for children under 3 (limit of

San Marcos De Apalache State Historic Site (St. Marks)
This is the site of two wooden forts circa 1500, replaced by a stone
fort circa 1739. During the 1800s the fort's stones were used to build
