FPEA Legislative Committee Update for February 20, 2012

Unfortunately, SB 1704 was passed with only one negative vote, cast by Bill Montford from the 6th District. This is the bill which mandates the State (in other words, your tax dollars) pay for the creation of a separate athletic association to govern private schools, and spills over into homeschool co-ops, in Florida.

This action will impact all Florida taxpayers because we already pay for the Florida High School Athletic Association which was created by the Legislature in 2006 to maintain control over high school athletics.  They oversee all athletics but private schools can create their own athletic association outside of the FHSAA, without an act by the Legislature.  This can cause issues with many home educated families as we participate in athletics at both public and private schools.

The FPEA Legislative Committee will be meeting with Jeff Atwater, chief financial officer of Florida. During our appointment, we will address issues such as the passing of S.B. 1704.

This appears to be headed to the House for approval — we will let you know when that happens. In the meantime, if you would like to read the complete bill, see http://www.flsenate.gov/PublishedContent/Committees/2010-2012/ED/MeetingRecords/ED_Jan_30_Meeting_Packet.pdf and go to page 65 of the document.

The new association ( SIAA) will be self funded. There will be no impact on the citizens taxes is my understanding. Do you know how much money the legislature gives fhsaa to operate on? I think you might do well to do some research. There is no monies set aside for SIAA other than dues that would be paid anyway. Choice is a good thing.
